No need to create a new account, Google has officially allowed 'renaming' for all old Gmail addresses.
Most of us have an email address that makes us 'blush' every time we send a CV to a recruiter or share it with a partner. Names that were funny when created 10 years ago have now become barriers to a professional digital identity. After a long time of users having to 'reluctantly endure' this, Google has finally officially rolled out the feature to change account username (Gmail address).
Gmail officially allows users to 'rename'
Gmail allows email address changes
Personal Info > Email > Google Account email > Change Google Account email. The system will guide users through verification steps to set up a more professional new username.
Gmail email address can now be changed
A major advantage of this feature is the connection preservation mechanism. Google states that the old email address will not be deleted but retained as an alias email. This means you can still use the old address to log in, all emails sent to the old address will still arrive in your current inbox, and you can even choose to send emails using the old address name if needed. While very convenient, Google has also set strict limits to prevent abuse. Users are only allowed to change their name once every 12 months. Additionally, each account can change a maximum of 3 times (owning a maximum of 4 email addresses total). If you decide to revert to the old name, you must wait 30 days before making another change. Although this rollout is currently prioritizing the US market, the tech community believes the new feature will soon reach global audiences, helping users everywhere escape the nightmare of "youthful email addresses".
